Andi's Alters
I've portrayed a wide variety of characters in my theatrical career, from a singing cat to a Siamese twin. While I have never been one of those actors who "lives" a part, I have found that some characters have taken up permanent residence in my warped psyche. Here are some of my multiple personalities on- and off-stage:
Salaam namaste! We are sooo cute!
My obsession with Bollywood movies lead to my being a Bollywood dancer for Halloween 05. Evil Twin John joined me for the annual Halloween block party on Cedar Springs. While we were posing for pictures, John was recognized by a "robot" who had seen him in several Uptown shows.
The following Halloween, my Evil Twin had a sprained ankle and didn't make it to the block party, but I continued my new tradition and went Bollywood again, this time in a vibrant print sari I had purchased the week before.
Shakalaka baby!
Oh, Ricky!
Photographer Mark Oristano created a photo exhibit at the Trinity River Arts Center using well-known local performers to recreate famous actors and scenes from posters, films, and TV. My Wild Party hubby, Zak Stefaniak, worked some make-up magic to turn me into Lucille Ball. My *hubby* also worked some of his own magic as a photographer to create the cool 1920s photo of me during Wild Party - he did pics of the whole cast that are available at his CafePress store.
I vont to be alone
I am Queen
As Queen Evianna of Aquatania in 20,000 Babes Beneath the Sea, I was dubbed the queen of campy tragedy and described as "channeling Carol Burnett". All I can say is it's good to be the queen.
bettina
Bettina Barnes in Psycho Beach Party. Bettina was a B-movie actress, the perfect dim-bulb bimbo starlet. The animal print pants and shoes somehow found their way into my closet at home (What a surprise!)
dona carla
Doña Carla de Lagrimas in Tearjerker! I found myself channeling Joan Crawford with a Spanish accent as the embittered wheelchair-bound wife of Don Donny. I consider the striptease I performed in the wheelchair a high point of my career.
drood
See if you can follow this character subtext for the play-within-the-play: Andi as English music hall male impersonator Alice Nutting dressed as Edwin Drood performing a dramatization of Charles Dickens' Mystery of Edwin Drood in the musical Drood! Not only did I get to throw an actor's tantrum onstage every night, I got to return from the dead! What more could an actor ask for?
abfab2
Many Halloweens ago, fellow cybergrrrl Cynthia and I dressed as Patsy and Edina. And we were "Absolutely Fabulous," sweetie-darling! (Also notable is the fact that we were most likely the first women to dress as Eddie and Pats, that activity usually being reserved for lower-echelon drag queens.) Cynthia is wearing a dress that she's had since junior high school.
succubus
No, that's not Xena, Warrior Princess, it's Andi, Dreaded Succubus in the Charles Busch campy comedy Vampire Lesbians of Sodom. ;I made the Vampire costume—or should I say Vampixena costume—from a Victor Costa cocktail dress. The costume now resides in my closet next to the Callisto outfit (talk about split personalities!)
Samurai! At my first Xena/Herc Convention, I actually won the costume contest as Callisto, Xena's arch-enemy. I met up with Deb, an even more notorious faux heroine, who habitually dresses as Xena. faux heroes
