Fun Spots to Visit on the Web

The Oracle of Bacon at Virginia - You can actually find out if you are within Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon at this website. Enter someone you know in showbiz and the oracle will determine the *Bacon Number* for that person. For example, I have worked on stage shows with Alan Tudyk and Michael Urie. When I entered their names, the oracle returned their degree of separation from Kevin Bacon, and they both have a Bacon Number of 2 because they were in films in which someone else in that film was in another film with Kevin Bacon. So that means I have a Bacon Number of 3, having worked with Alan and Michael. Woohoo!

Charles Busch Blogspot -  I have been a huge fan of Charles Busch, the playwright, ever since I performed in his Psycho Beach Party and then I had the absolute joy of meeting him when I directed the first stage production of Die Mommie Die! since its original premiere in LA. His friend Dean keeps up with Charles' busy schedule with a great blog and, of course, there is also the official website for this talented artist as well, Charles Busch The Official Website.

The Church of Areaology - Believe it or not, a cult has developed devoted to the study (i.e. Obsession) with David Bowie's "area" (i.e. his groin...). I don't make this stuff up, I swear. There are numerous sites out there about The Area as it is referred to, but this seems to be one of the most...um...detailed. Enjoy!

Whoosh! - This is the ne plus ultra of fan magazines for Xena: Warrior Princess, as well as other pop culture. They published an article of mine on the many Xena actors that appeared in The Lord of the Rings films! That my friend Cynthia happens to write for it, as well as maintain the FAQ and the episode guide is beside the point...

Undiscovered Musicals - I got my B.F.A in musical theatre, and have an extensive collection of cast recordings from Broadway and around the world.  If you are a fellow musical-philiac, check out this site for info on rare and unusual musicals.

Wing Music - If you have never heard this woman sing, you are in for a treat - and a lot of laughs! Wing is a Chinese immigrant in New Zealand who is truly dedicated to her love of singing. Via her website, she developed fans all over the world and was even discovered by the South Park guys, who wrote a whole episode around Wing and her unique song stylings - Dancing Queen will never sound the same again!

Teddy Scares - While attending a scifi convention, I discovered these wonderfully psycho stuffed Teddy Bears, called Teddy Scares. They are stuffed bears that look like something Dr. Frankenstein stitched together - literally! The small ones come in their own body bag, complete with the date of "death" and the slogan "Once soft and cuddly - now dead and bloody!" How twisted!!!

Timeless Trends - If you are into Ren fairs, or just like to dress fashionably for a previous century, this site offers excellent hand-made corsets at great prices. I tried one on at a scifi con and was cinched down to a 20 inch waist - Scarlett O'Hara, eat your heart out!

UglyDress.com - This site started out as a personal site about one woman's experience with hideous bridesmaids dresses, but it has spawned so much more now! Ugly Wedding dresses, prom dresses, tuxedos, shoes... You can laugh at the suffering of others and submit your own nightmare of a dress!

FanDone site - Thanks to my love of all Joss Whedon-related productions like Buffy and Firefly, I have met lots of other Scifi fans locally and on the web. Here's a great fan-run site with merchandise and other links to Firefly connections and other stuff.

The Urban Legends site - Are you tired of getting all of those forwarded emails? You know, some money-making deal if you send it on to 20 friends, or a dangerous warning about some health scare or human organ theft ring. Here's a site to debunk these stories being emailed all over cyberspace.

DeadElvis.com - And speaking of urban legends, ever wonder what "The King" has been up to since he died. Well, this is the site for you. Not only will you find supposed sightings and doctored photos of a deceased Elvis, you can find other reported dead celebrity appearances, such as Mother Teresa and Princess Di. Wonderfully twisted!

The Official Star Wars site - When I attended the openings of the Star Wars trilogy 20th anniversary releases, I brought along the Chewbacca and R2D2 toys that I got at the original release of Star Wars (I was a mere baby, then...)  For news on a galaxy far, far away, go to George Lucas-sanctioned site. And I want to go on record as saying that I enjoyed The Phantom Menace... So everyone else can go Jar-Jar themselves!

Ain't It Cool News - For the "unofficial" scoop on Star Wars or any other film, Harry and his international network of spies have the inside buzz. Sort of an underground, unauthorized version of Entertainment Tonight.

Jump the Shark.com - a TV junkie's fantasy come true. This funny site explores the whens and whys of the decline of your favorite tv shows. The name of the site refers to the precise moment that a television show started going downhill, in this case the moment on Happy Days when the Fonz jumped over the shark on the Hawaiian vacation episode. The site breaks tv show deterioration into a variety of telltale categories - my particular favorite being the point on any show when Ted McGinley begins playing a recurring character.

Awful Plastic Surgery - Since plastic surgery is a hobby of mine, I am greatly amused by this celebrity dish site. I'm all for Youthen-izing, but some celebs just don't know when enough is enough - Did anyone say Michael "Have-you-seen-where-my-nose-fell-off" Jackson?

Cardigan Welsh Corgi Club of America - Corgi is a combination of Welsh words meaning "dwarf dog," and they are said to be enchanted fairy dogs.  (The Welsh must drink like the Irish do!) To learn about the breed my Callisto belongs to, Cardi Corgis, check out the national club site.

MyCatHatesYou.com - While my cats ADORE me and Callisto, this is still a very funny site for cat lovers as well as those who don't appreciate felines the way I do.

Naturallycurly.com - At last there is a site for the curly headed among us. All my life I struggled with curly fine hair when straight was always "in". Two Austin gals have a fabulous site that I highly recommend, especially if you have to fight the dreaded "Texas Frizz Factor" like me.
There is also a terrific book for the care and feeding of curly heads entitled "Curly Girl" by Lorraine Massey.

L.A. County Coroner's Gift Shop - Winner of the prize for most perverse online shopping experience. Yes, this is for real, folks. This is the gift shop for the infamous L.A. County Coroner (and we're not talking Quincy!). You can now be the proud owner of such officially endorsed items as a coroner toe tag key chain or murdered body outline beach towel. Scary, very scary!

One Leg Up Leg Lamps - Remember the terrific holiday comedy film A Christmas Story? Set in 1940s Indiana, it told the story of young Ralphie and his one wish for Christmas, a Daisy Red Ryder BB gun ("You'll shoot your eye out!") Well, now you can have something to remember this film in your own living room. There is a company which sells the infamous Leg Lamp which was featured in the film so order yours today!

Jolene's Trailer Park - I gotta admit what hooked me on this site was Jolene's recipe for Deer Poop Cookies! Yes, she had posted a recipe to make chocolate cookies that looked like deer poop - how could you NOT love this site?!!! Stand up comedian/drag queen, Jolene Sugarbaker is the self-proclaimed Trailer Park Queen and Lifestyle Coordinator for White Trash with Class and this is a site to visit regularly if you have a warped sense of humor like I do.

Hell in a Handbag Productions - A theater company in Chicago founded by writer/drag actor extraordinaire David Cerda. David and I made a web connection when he was doing research on 50s and 60s cult movies and stumbled onto script information for my play High School Hellcats in Heels. He also writes wicked parodies of classic movies from decades past and I am certain that we were sisters in a previous incarnation. If you get to Chicago, check out his shows - in the meantime, visit his theater website and enjoy his daily blog.

Maximum Broadway - A site for Broadway musical lovers trapped in day jobs. Broadcasting over the internet, you can listen to showtunes all day long in your cubicle while you perform your daily drudgery at work - just don't burst into a chorus of "Oklahoma!" or your coworkers will look at you strangely.

Good Orient - As a lover of Hong Kong movies, my Far Eastern obsession has extended into home decor and wardrobe on ocasion. This site has everything from Chinese Lanterns and fans to gorgeous silk Cheongsam dresses. Shop til you drop-kick!

Z Photography at CafePress.com - Good friend and former stage-hubby of mine Zachary Stefaniak is a talented photographer who took really cool photos of our Wild Party cast. Set in the 20s, the show was very much the decadent Roaring Twenties and he decided to create a whole photo series based on the 1920s theme with the cast as his models. It's kinda neat to drink out of a coffee mug with my picture on it (well, at least I think so!)

You can find more links to other fun and informative sites sprinkled throughout the pages of AndiWorld.
