Play(wright's) Pen: The Play's the Thing!
I am the author of a number of plays, six which premiered at Dallas
area theaters, including
HIGH SCHOOL HELLCATS IN HEELS opened to
rave reviews and packed
houses! I'm a member of the DFW Playwrights Alliance and the Dramatists
Guild.
I have written full length comedies and children's plays. All of my scripts
are designed to be performed with minimal set needs, making them ideal for small
theaters with limited space and tight budgets. The cast size for most
is 8-11, with plenty of women/girl's roles. My plays are generally family-friendly,
though BABY JANE is PG-13.
Since I got my first experience in
theater as a teen doing children's theater with the Junior Players Guild, it was only natural that I was
commissioned by Garland Civic Theatre to write 4 children's plays. The plays were performed
for a wide age range and toured the North Texas area. Originally
performed by actors aged 12-18 playing all the teenage and adult roles, the sets can be simple to make them easily portable, the
cast sizes are small, with running times of 45 minutes to an hour. Perfect for teen actors
and education groups, I've had
requests for these scripts from theaters, camps, and schools around the country.
Information on how to contact me for performance rights and perusal scripts can be found at the bottom of this page. Video demos from the original productions are also available at minimal cost for theater companies considering these scripts for production.
All the material on this page is copyrighted, as are my scripts. |
HIGH SCHOOL HELLCATS IN HEELS,
a satire of all those really bad 50's B-movie teen exploitation flicks,
was loosely inspired by Ed Wood's
screenplay for The Violent Years. It follows the downward spiral
of an innocent young girl as she gets caught up in a life of fast cars,
cigarettes, and - gasp - drinking, when she falls in with the wrong
crowd at her high school. This play was dubbed "funniest show of the year"
in the Dallas Observer best of 2003 theater wrap-up. Read the
fabulous reviews from
its sold-out run for more details on the plot and characters. Here's my
favorite review quote:
"If the comedy High
School Hellcats in Heels were ice cream, it would be cherry bubble gum with licorice chips. If it were a sweater, it would be fuzzy pink angora over a pointy D-cup. And if it really were a B-movie from the 1950s, it would star Mamie Van Doren, Russ Tamblyn and Terry Moore...High
School Hellcats is bubbly comedy shot through with dark jabs at midcentury good-girl-gone-bad movies. With heavy scoops of the same twisted wickedness of John Waters' Crybaby and Hairspray, the script by Dallas writer Andi Allen offers an intelligent, deliciously bitter take on the hypocritical moral codes of the Beaver Cleaver era."

BIKINI BEACH BLOODSUCKERS
premiered at the Pocket Sandwich Theater in Dallas in 1996,
enjoying a successful run and receiving a Leon Rabin Award
nomination
from the Dallas Theater League for Outstanding New Play.
Not bad for my first playwriting effort! The plot involves 60s
teenagers reminiscent of Frankie and Annette who find their beach fun interrupted by the appearance of a mysterious
blood-thirsty countess. Baby boomers will especially enjoy all the 60s
TV and song references, while audiences of all ages get a hoot out of watching this Beach Party movie spoof with a dash of good old horror movie villains thrown in. A review of the show said "the dialogue
is hilarious and the sight gags are priceless." (Video available)

ZOMBIE A-GO-GO!
is
the sequel to BIKINI BEACH BLOODSUCKERS
and finds our four Beach Party teenagers once
again stumbling into the middle of a B-movie horror plot. This
time they help a Jamaican boatman/undercover spy save the world
from a Voodoo priestess (a Marlena Dietrich lookalike) who is
using zombies to restore the Nazis to power. A highly successful
reading of ZOMBIE was presented at
Pegasus Theatre in the spring of 1998.

SUPERMODEL SUPER SPIES: MORTAL KOMPACT! is another
comedy spoof of the 1960s. This time I take on the spy genre immortalized
by James Bond, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., The Girl From U.N.C.L.E.,
and my personal favorite, The Avengers. Inspired by - or perhaps
frightened by - the original TV show Charlie's Angels, I created a trio
of supermodels who are as intent upon making a fashion statement as they are
defeating a criminal mastermind bent on forcing the world to wear his demented fashion designs.

BABY JANE'S HUDSON FAMILY CHRISTMAS is something
different; a ten minute one-act play turning the cult film Whatever Happened
to Baby Jane into a twisted Christmas show. If you are looking for a perversely
funny take on the Yuletide season, this short script is it! In this wicked parody,
Baby Jane Hudson, the Bette Davis role, attempts a career comeback on 1960's TV
with a holiday variety show. Sister Blanche, the Joan Crawford role, is along
for the ride in her wheelchair and to spice things up, I've added a Swedish male
nurse for some beefcake. The live TV special quickly disintegrates into macabre
mayhem when both sisters don't feel like displaying holiday cheer towards each
other. I am currently working on expanding this piece into a full one act play
about 40 minutes in length.
10 minute one-act, cast size: 1 m, 2 w, + 2 offstage voices, ages 20-50s

SLEEPING
BEAUTY ON SUNSET BEACH is my reworking of the fairy tale "Briar Rose (Sleeping Beauty), moving the story to the 1960s California beach, complete with beach parties and surfing. Parents will catch all the baby boomer references, while kids can enjoy
all the visual effects and action involving teens who battle against a wicked witch (naturally) and lift a magic spell with
the aid of the family dog and funny sea creatures. (Video available)
One act children's play, cast size: 9 actors = 2 m, 3 w,
4 roles non-gender specific, ages 14-50 (In the original cast, all the
roles were played by teenage actors.)

CINDERELLA SUMMER CAMP is a 90's version
of Cinderella set in a summer camp. This Cinderella fights some very modern,
and funny, villains and defends environmental issues on behalf of her
forest friends, including a talking beaver and charmingly inept magic
fieldmouse.

One act children's play, cast size: 2 m, 7 w, ages 16-40ish
(In the original cast, all the roles were played by teenage actors.)

Perusal Copies, Performance
Rights & Royalties:
Free perusal copies are
available upon request to theaters, producing organizations and
their authorized representatives (such as directors, dramaturges,
script-reading committee members, and literary managers - anyone
who works with a theater company that can make script recommendations
for productions) Receiving a perusal copy does NOT automatically grant performance rights.
Royalties are generally on a per-performance basis and vary based on ticket price, theater size,
and professional/amateur status (I'm very reasonable and happy to negotiate a royalty that works for both
the theater and me, the playwright). Educational groups and schools may be eligible for special arrangements regarding royalty fees. Students can also receive special deals for continued use of a script or portion of a script for school dramatic and forensic competitions.
If you would like to receive a video or audio tape of the original production along with your perusal
copy, a tape can be mailed to you for a nominal fee. The script perusal copy is free and sent via email,
whether you request the additional tape or not.
To request a perusal copy or to inquire about performance rights and royalties, please send me an
